PARAMOUNT PICTURES: IMPLEMENTATION OF SMART FLOORING SYSTEM
Paramount Pictures aims to adopt innovative technologies for energy efficiency and environmental sustainability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and work towards achieving its Better Climate Challenge commitment of 50% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2028 from a 2018 baseline. In 2023, Paramount Pictures implemented a smart flooring system in the Freeman Building, located on the Paramount Pictures Studio Lot in Los Angeles, as a key part of the strategy to enhance building management and significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Smart flooring sensor underlay
The patented sensor underlay was installed across all three entrances of the Freeman Building, where the Energy and Engineering Team, Facilities Management, Capital Construction and Dispatch Operations are located. The system captures nearly every footstep, providing comprehensive occupancy data. The sensor technology is designed for precision and flexibility, ensuring accurate data collection in high-traffic areas. The underlayment’s design facilitates easy installation under various flooring types and requires minimal maintenance. A team of experienced engineers has been employed to ensure the integrity and robustness of data collection and system integration. The engineers oversee the installation, calibration, and maintenance of the system, ensuring seamless operation and accurate data output.
A cloud-based dashboard offers real-time insights and alerts, enabling proactive building management and optimization of HVAC systems based on real-time occupancy data. By optimizing HVAC operations according to actual occupancy, Paramount Pictures anticipates up to 35% annual energy savings, as demonstrated by industry-tested results and the building’s variable occupancy densities. This significant reduction in energy usage is crucial in minimizing Paramount Pictures’ operational costs and improving overall energy efficiency.
The Paramount Studio Lot spread across 62 acres, which includes Office space, 29 Production Stages, Post Production Facilities, Warehouse, Manufacturing and Amenities has reduced greenhouse gas levels by 30% compared to 2018 levels, which equates to approximately 14,300 tons of CO₂e averted. This innovative sensor technology, and others, will enable Paramount Pictures to continuously reduce greenhouse gas emissions and aligns with its Better Climate Challenge commitment.
Paramount Pictures plans to expand this smart flooring technology to additional facilities, leveraging the system’s scalability and the continuous software updates.
